One thing I’ve learned to count on over the past decade of viewing student work is their talent for sniffing out some of the world’s worst problems and turning them into studio projects. Natural disasters attract student ambition, as does any kind of problem rooted in land use (and what isn’t these days?), from housing to border migration to the dissolution of communities and their histories. There is no problem too disheartening, too overwhelming, or too intractable for students to tackle. The smallest and most specific problems receive attention and seriousness of purpose equal to the largest.
Even if many of these are mostly conceptual rather than tactical exercises, it’s hard not to feel excited that landscape architecture students believe they can effect change. But I found myself equally enraptured with…
