A winning proposal for the Ontario Association of Architects HQ surprises even the design team.

COMPETITIONS A proposal by the landscape designer Behnaz Assadi and the architect Nima Javidi of Ja Architecture Studio has won the design competition for the Ontario Association of Architects headquarters. Developed in collaboration with Todd Douglas of Janet Rosenberg & Studio and Kayam Ramsewak of MTE Consultants, “The Grounding Meadow” explores the idea of “shared territory” and tackles prominent urban issues like flooding, biodiversity loss, and Canada’s history of colonization. Where the existing ground plane slopes dramatically away from the building footprint, the proposed landscape uses cut and fill to capture and treat water, acknowledging the site’s proximity to the Don River Valley and its ravine system.
