University City District has a plan to tackle urban heat with Philadelphia’s waterfront.

CLIMATE A proposed $60 million public space project on the Schuylkill River would convert an underused section of the waterfront into a bilevel deck where city residents and visitors can get a break from the heat. The project is being led by the University City District (UCD), a nonprofit organization that works to develop land on the west side of the Schuylkill River and offers services similar to a business improvement district without the formal classification or the business taxes. The organization has spearheaded public space projects before, including the Porch at 30th Street Station, a 30,000-square-foot public space along Market Street that is currently being redesigned as part of a $550 million renovation of the train station.
