Shortly after the George Floyd protests in 2020, I saw an article about Seneca Village and the displacement Central Park had on that historically Black community. I started to look at the impact of other large parks, and it was heartbreaking to see the adverse effects that came from creating spaces for people and communities to use. Unintended Consequences These effects are still happening well over a century later. New parks, trails, and waterfronts are attractive, and the more amenities they have—like splash pads, playgrounds, and dog parks—the more appealing they are. Within a few years, developers start buying the land that surrounds them, and prices start to skyrocket. For example, 2012’s Klyde Warren Park in Dallas was designed to connect the lower-income west side with downtown, above a freeway.…
