In 2021, the World Bank published the second part of Groundswell:Preparing for Internal Climate Migration on the anticipated impact of climate change as a driver of migration. The update did not have good news, expanding its lens from Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America, the subject of the first report, to include the rest of the world. The authors stated that “as many as 216 million people could move within their own countries due to slow-onset climate change impacts by 2050.” Within 25 years, without direct action, 216 million people will be internal migrants. In addition, the authors stated that by 2030, the “hot spots” for internal migration will likely be very evident. The scale of movement within countries and regions is matched by projected figures for international migration.…
