But actually, in Georgia, we can xeriscape, and it’s still very lush.”—CARLEY RICKLES, ASLA It’s fitting that a large dining space and a custom grill were on the wish list for the backyard renovation of a chef’s home, but the most essential updates for this Martin Rickles Studio project began on the ground. The original terrain, impervious and eroded, sloped toward the house, trapping both rainwater and noise from the nearby highway. Thedesign team added subtle steps made of weathered steel edgers and shredded organic mulch to form a mat, and remedied the soil to support 11 new trees that help stabilize the slope.
