High Five

A unique vision plan for central Ohio puts the region’s waterways front and center.

“It wasn’t a design competition, but it was,” says Keith Myers, FASLA, a founding principal of MKSK. He’s talking about RAPID 5, a collaboration of sorts between five landscape architecture firms in central Ohio that, if realized, would vastly increase access to green space for dozens of communities in the region. Centered on the five waterways that flow through Franklin County, the idea was to develop a single contiguous open space network. “If you’re able to create these greenways, you could put everybody in the county within a couple miles of a major park system,” Myers says. Myers organized RAPID 5 while he was district council chair of the Urban Land Institute Columbus, in collaboration with the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission.
