LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS GET REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE WITH TOYOTA.

Toyota’s first automotive battery plant globally, a $13.9 billion facility on 1,800 acres, is scheduled to open in rural central North Carolina next year. And with it will come a 174-acre environmental education area designed by undergraduate landscape architecture students at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T), a historically Black university (HBCU) in nearby Greensboro, North Carolina. The partnership emerged out of a chance meeting between Michael Robinson, a senior engineering manager at Toyota North Carolina, and Steve Rasmussen Cancian, ASLA, an assistant professor of landscape architecture at NC A&T. “Within a month or two, we had a commitment that our seniors would design this project and that they [would] build what the students designed, which was really extraordinary,” Cancian says.
