Arecent analysis of 32 cities found that, because A of the rapid rate of land subsidence along the U.S. coasts, nearly a quarter of a million more people will face inundation by 2050 than is currently projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Published in the journal Nature, the study by researchers at Virginia Tech combined sea-levelrise projections with rates of vertical land motion between 2007 and 2020. Although the rate of subsidence was greater than that of sea-level rise in at least three locations along the Gulf Coast, the researchers found that it was the Atlantic Coast that represented the largest share (79–89 percent) of the exposed population.
