In Praise of Patience

NOW IN ITS 11TH YEAR, the International Landscape Photographer of the Year competition selected 101 of the most compelling landscape photographs from thousands of entries by professional and amateur photographers. Andrew Mielzynski, a Canadian photographer, was awarded International Landscape Photographer of the Year for his portfolio of four photographs, ranging from snowy landscapes to the Atacama Desert. The six judges noted that the primary challenge of landscape photography was the landscape itself, which is fickle and ever-changing. They complimented Mielzynski’s “patience, perseverance, and determination”—necessary but often unseen skills of a successful landscape photographer. Japan’s Ryohei Irie won Photograph of the Year for his long-exposure image of a forest. Special awards were given to J.
