IN FRONT OF AN APARTMENT COMPLEX in Slabtown, an industrial site turned neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, there are three giant sequoias that tower over a public plaza and reach as high as the eighth floor. The redwoods were transplanted and craned into place in 2018, a part of the plaza design that landscape architect Kurt Lango, ASLA, was delighted to see make it through value-engineering. “It was amazing to think about how to design for them and provide enough soil depth and volume so they would be healthy,” says Lango, a principal and cofounder of Portland-based Lango Hansen Landscape Architects, who has worked on Slabtown since 2012.
