Some of the saltiest political commentary on urban planning ever to be published can be found in the post-World War II issues of this magazine. Even Robert Moses, the firebrand New York City bureaucrat and the subject of Robert Caro’s The Power Broker, had a handful of bylines in LAM between 1943 and 1969. In 1965, LAM published “How to Destroy/Create a City,” a conversation in print between Moses and Peter Blake. Both essays appeared elsewhere before being placed side by side in LAM. The previous March, Blake had published “How to Destroy a City” in the New York Herald Tribune, and Moses was unable to resist a rebuttal, in part because “the author is an editor with a following of sorts.” Blake was an architect and the editor of…
