As I began this note, late on January 7, wildfires had only just broken out in Los Angeles, a city with a population of approximately 3.8 million. When I finally stopped rapidly refreshing the news at 3:00 a.m. that first night, the Palisades Fire had ripped through the hills above Los Angeles’s Westside, and the Eaton Fire had just started in Altadena, still small at 200 acres. By the next day, only the second day of the disaster, there were five distinct wildfires, and the Eaton and Palisades fires had bloomed to more than 10,000 acres. All five wildfires remain uncontained as of this writing.
