“Coastal communities in general face increasing challenges due to our changing environment.” A tiny island in the Chesapeake Bay, home to just 300 people, is on the frontlines of climate change. From 1850 to 2013, Tangier, Virginia, lost more than 66 percent of its land mass and today experiences regular flooding of streets and the yards of houses. “Coastal communities in general face increasing challenges due to our changing environment,” says Lincoln Lewis, ASLA, who’s also a Ph.D. student in the University of Virginia’s interdisciplinary Constructed Environment program.
