Landscape representation has enjoyed a long and significant history in the fine arts, but it remains somewhat less explored in cinema—a medium for which it seems uniquely suited. Movies are shot on location all the time, of course, but more often than not, these settings merely constitute backdrops for cinematic action. Bernard Lassus’s observation that “Landscape is a cultural reading that renews the concrete space that surrounds us” suggests broad latitude in interpreting the meaning of the term beyond the usual references to the quiet, pastoral idyll.
