FOR YEARS, MOST OF SHORELINE, WASHINGTON’S Kruckeberg Botanic Garden was inaccessible but for a steep, narrow trail. Any structure that would provide improved access had to navigate the slope, dozens of protected trees, and a lack of vehicular access, which ruled out any structure requiring a crane. “It had to be people powered,” says Dorothy Faris, ASLA, a partner at Mithun. The solution was a boardwalk carried by Diamond Piers—shallow, faceted concrete footings whose angled steel pins allow for on-site adjustments—and a custom steel connection, designed in collaboration with KPFF Consulting Engineers, that could rotate with the pier.
