UNCERTAINTY about which building to approach is no way to arrive at a museum. But for well over a decade, the urban design of the Denver Art Museum (DAM) and its precinct suffered from a figure-ground problem. Too many major buildings had accumulated in the precinct without enough attention to the mediating spaces in between, to the point where the museum’s visitors were largely left to decide for themselves which was the main way in. But a recent renovation and extension—including an overhaul of the DAM’s Lanny and Sharon Martin Building and the addition of a new building, the Anna and John J.
