INSPIRED BY SHANGHAI’S LILONG, or back streets, the two most dynamic elements of the Roof are the bright red hue of its covered atrium and the hundreds of tapered pots affixed to the building’s facade. ASPECT Studios’ Shanghai office worked with Ateliers Jean Nouvel’s landscape studio to design the landscape for the 430,000-square-foot office and retail development. This included the plantings for the articulated pots, which range from 2.5 feet to 3.5 feet in height and which, in aggregate, provide 18,643 square feet of landscape spread across all seven floors. THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE concrete pots are secured to the building with a lower arm and a bracket midway up the pot. Plantings sit within an inner galvanized steel cage lined with geotextile fabric.
