MNLA carves out a pedestrian respite amid the bustle of a new urban district.

URBAN DESIGN The confusing, subterranean maze of corridors that make up New York’s Penn Station, the nation’s busiest rail hub, can seem like punishment for the sin of demolishing McKim, Mead & White’s original Pennsylvania Station in the 1960s. But recently, there have been major changes aboveground: A portion of the Farley Post Office, another Beaux-Arts beauty by McKim, Mead & White, has been turned into the Moynihan Train Hall, and new development is underway, including an effort to rebrand the area as the Penn District. With these changes has come a new 17,700-square-foot pedestrian plaza on a section of West 33rd Street.
