The Beauty (and Benefits) of Outdoor Learning Spaces

The nonprofit organization Out Teach proves that outdoor learning spaces can be community-driven projects.

At L.P. Miles Elementary School in Atlanta, nonprofit outdoor learning lab design firm Out Teach hosted an event called Design and Dine. It was a chance for the school’s teachers to come together to brainstorm ideas and share goals for their future space. One of their goals: raise awareness of Black scientists, farmers, and horticulturalists. This goal was realized with the addition of three signs celebrating African American luminaries in science and horticulture. Around those, an inspired outdoor learning lab was born, complete with raised vegetable beds, a butterfly garden, birdhouses, a small library, and flexible seating.
