Brooklyn Bridge Park, a book authored mostly by the landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA), with the help of a variety of writers, is an impressive object. The coffee table dimensions provide generous acreage for endless pages of lush, full-bleed photos that depict the 85-acre park on the East River waterfront as a slice of nirvana. Interspersed between the pictures and schematic drawings are narratives describing the ingenious re-creation of New York City’s long-lost preindustrial waterfront, a high-minded version of the artifice associated with theme parks. The physical size of the book drives home the point that the 1.3-mile-long park is a monumental project, the kind of transformative endeavor that often feels beyond reach.
