Landscape has long been part of America’s history and national imagination, and few things are more revered or contested than the nation’s land. From the symbolic power of the country’s topographical diversity to its rich natural resources, unequal access, and environmental anxieties, landscape is the site of an excess of potent narratives. The traveling exhibition (Un)Settled: The Landscape in American Art gathers works spanning 200 years to examine enduring cultural and historic themes present in the visual arts.
