Karoobossies, daardie ikoniese groep Suid-Afrikaanse plante wat allerweë beskou word as die rede vir Karoolam se sonderlinge geur en smaak, se genoom gaan vanjaar ontsyfer word. CenGen (Edms.) Bpk., ’n onafhanklike plantgenetiese laboratorium op Worcester wat die werk gaan doen, het dié aankondiging in Desem-ber op die aanlyn platform LinkedIn gemaak. Afgesien daarvan dat dit die eerste sodanige poging op verskillende gebiede is, gaan dit ’n waardevolle hulpbron vir wetenskap in die toekoms skep. Dr. Renée Prins, stigter en direkteur van CenGen, sê die ontsyfering van die genoom van vyf karoobossies is deel van die 1KSA-inisiatief waarvolgens die genoomvolgorde van 1 000 unieke Suid-Afrikaanse diere, plante en swamme bepaal gaan word.
