The LRO Series III has been plagued by an oil leak since it went back on the road. What started as a light mist around the front of the sump (which has already been off and resealed) has now become a regular drip – and it didn’t take long to trace the culprit. The crankshaft front oil seal is fitted into the face of the timing cover of the venerable two-and-a-quarter petrol, and it’s this seal that’s given up the ghost. A simple combination of age and wear means it no longer holds back the oil; hopefully the crank pulley’s sealing surface isn’t ridged. Our Series III is a 1982 model, and is fitted with the five-main-bearing 2.25-litre petrol engine, but the process is the same for earlier three-main bearing units. If…
