Understand your DPF
If you’ve spent any amount of time talking about (or in ownership of) a post-2009 diesel Land Rover, you’ll no doubt be aware of the infamous diesel particulate filter, or DPF. The sole reason for the DPF system existing is to lower engine emissions. By catching the harmful particulates produced by incomplete diesel combustion, the DPF lowers the amount of soot that’s allowed to escape out of the tailpipe and into the environment. As with any filter, though, when it clogs up it must be cleaned. To do this, the temperature in the filter must reach about 600ºC – hot enough to burn off the particulates and turn the nasty soot into harmless ash, carbon dioxide and water, which simply exits from the exhaust.
