How’d they get there?
I doubt if despatch records for the Series III Lightweight contain any reference to vehicles being shipped to Angola during the civil war in the 1980s. But I believe about 40 were sent out to UNITA forces – about half of them had 14.5mm anti-aircraft cannons, and the other half were gunship-types that carried a 106mm anti-tank weapon. So how did they get there? Well, I was told many years ago by Bert Sachse, who owned the gunship pictured, that they came from a government that was sympathetic to the UNITA cause. Tracing the VIN of this vehicle (SALLBBAH2AA-237384), I find that it was shipped to neighbouring Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) in April 1986.
