Shuggie’s Pizza co-owners Kayla Abe and David Murphy are a ridiculously charming duo, two awesome people doing truly awesome things. Originally teaming up to launch Ugly Pickle Co., they followed their passion in as much an environmental-activist capacity as a food-based one. In fact, food and climate are intrinsically intertwined—the global food industry (which includes fuel and transportation costs) is a major source of climate change. In addition to a diverse line of pickled products, Ugly Pickle Co. hosted popular Fried Chicken Sando and Raclette Pop-Ups. Then Covid happened and so many things changed for small businesses everywhere. Pandemic-related supply chain issues (specifically, sourcing glass jars) helped nudge Kayla and David in a new direction.
