Before Escape from New York came along, pizza had always been places like Abby’s and Pietro’s in Portland, pizza parlors where I would go with my parents after Little League games or for birthdays. You would get these cracker-crust pizzas with lots of little sturdy slices and pitchers of pop to feed a bunch of loud kids. I have a deep love for this kind of pizza. We were already roaming around old gritty Portland, taking the bus from the suburbs in search of records, guitars, and punk when Escape first opened in 1983 on SW Alder. Sure, they referenced the classic John Carpenter/Kurt Russell movie a lot, but the name also came from the fact that the owner, Phil, himself had escaped from New York to come to the…
