Jaffa oranges, also known as Shamouti oranges, are a variety developed during the mid-nineteenth century by farmers in Palestine. With thick skins that made them well-suited for storage and travel, they were a key export during the early years of the twentieth century. Their sweetness, deep orange color, and near-seedlessness made them wildly popular. Though exports had begun to decline during the 1930s due to competition from Spain and the United States, Jaffa oranges were still a point of pride among Palestinians. But in 1948, after Israel violently annexed most of the area where the orange groves stand, they became a symbol of the nation of Palestine and all that it had lost.…
