Long ago when I was an apprentice ata park's nursery we used to make all our own compost for growinga wide range of pot and bedding plants. Back then it wasa traditional John Innes loam-based mix, made from raw ingredients. Then for many years most gardeners used bagged compost – but like lots of things that go in cycles some people are now wanting to make their own potting compost again. Before we start we ought to clarify the different types of compost as there is sometimes a little confusion. The two main composts that we as gardeners come across are garden compost, and growing or potting compost.
