TRUFUL TRUFUL RIVER AT RISK, CHILE

The government of Chile just recently approved the construction of a hydroelectric plan that would divert the main flow of Truful Truful River for 2.5 km. It is estimated that the project would generate 11 MW. It would also occupy 4,600 hectares of incredible biodiversity and a sacred place for the local indigenous people, the Mapuches. From the kayaking point of view, it is a huge loss. Flowing off the southern side of Volcan Llaima (3125 m, the Truful Truful is one of the best class III runs in Chile. The crystal clear waters cascade through lava fields at a fast pace, and the surrounding snow peaks are fringed with Araucaria trees.
