SCOTT LINDGREN

Scott Lindgren revolutionized the way we film and document whitewater kayaking. From filming techniques and a fresh production approach to putting together teams and financing expeditions, he changed the way things were done. Lindgren spent his career pushing hard on the water, earning first descents worldwide and trying to complete the four rivers project—running all four rivers originating on Mount Kailash— before walking away from the sport for nearly a decade. But it wasn't until he was diagnosed with a brain tumor that Scott was forced to reckon with his own definition of strength. We met with Scott following the release of The River Runner, a film about his life, legacy, and return to the river directed and produced by Rush Sturges, available for public viewing this fall.

KS: Scott, after three and a half years, the River Runner is ready to be shown to audiences this fall. It’s an incredible documentary. How do you feel—proud, exhausted, relieved? SL: Rush and the crew did an amazing job. I feel all of the above. However, if I only had one word to describe it all, it would be vulnerable. KS: The film explores so many elements. How would you describe it? SL: It’s an adventure film that takes a deep dive into the behavior of someone who was able to live life to the fullest, then had it taken all away.
