THE KIRK BURN, SCOTLAND

With 318 runs in the guidebook, it is pretty rare to run a river in Scotland without at least a mention as a footnote. If there is a runnable river not in the guidebook, they are usually an obscure ditch hidden away in the northern highlands. However, the Kirk Burn is situated five miles from the largest city in Scotland (Glasgow). Tucked away in the Campsie Fells, the Kirk Burn starts life as a small rocky ditch but quickly gains momentum and volume as it drops more than 100 m in less than 1 km before culminating in the "triple combo," a trio of drops that give many of the better-known rivers in Scotland a run for their money.
