noun 1. "the self; that which feels, acts, or thinks," from Latin ego "I." 2. a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance. In this issue’s interview with Nouria Newman, she states that ego is needed to run hard whitewater. She reminds, however, that ego can also be dangerous. Newman makes a valid point. The most extreme feats are always the results of pushing one’s limits, and to do so, you need to have confidence, a belief that you are capable of executing the line you see.
