Protecting our eyes from UV radiation UV rays are an omnipresent factor in kayakers’ lives. Even when the sun is under cloud cover, we are still exposed to UV radiation. Most people have heard of the ozone layer and know that it offers some protection from UV exposure, but as the ozone layer gets depleted, we get intensified exposure from being outside. One thing that paddlers, especially young paddlers, don’t think about is how UV exposure affects their eyes! So what is UV radiation? Ultraviolet radiation is the high energy, shorter wavelength invisible spectrum of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun. These “invisible” rays can be damaging to both the skin and eyes.
