DOCTOR RIVER WHAT'S UP DOC? As many of you may have guessed, there is little information on sex-specific training for women, especially at an elite level of any sport! Instead, there is a lot of information about how men should train, which is applied across the sexes. When I went to medical school, the entire medical model was based on the 75 kg (165 lb) male, as if women and their bodies were not different from men's. Don't ask me why that didn't strike the entire medical educational community as incongruous! This column focuses on how women paddlers should think about training based on their menstrual cycle, but I encourage everyone to be educated on this topic.
