In July 2024, Owen Kurth and Willie Henkel made the first known kayak descent of Big Beaver Creek, a remote creek nestled in the heart of Washington's North Cascades. The journey began with a five-mile paddle across Ross Lake, a reservoir created by the 450-foot dam that impounds the Skagit River, part of the United States’ largest National Wild and Scenic River system. After reaching the mouth of Big Beaver Creek, the duo hiked twelve miles through rugged terrain to the creek's headwaters, located in the Pickett Range, one of the most imposing mountain ranges in the continental US.
