After a strong winter provided a well-above-average snowpack for many drainages, spring is finally starting to show its face in Idaho. One of the true classics, the South Fork of the Salmon River, should see strong flows well into the summer. However, the looming threat of a proposed gold mine within its headwaters has continued to move forward over the past year.
In January of 2023, the Forest Service concluded the comment period for the Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Stibnite Gold Project. Individuals along with regional and national conservation organizations submitted thousands of meaningful comments related to the troubling analysis that indicated increased stream temperatures for up to 100 years, loss of critical habitat for ESA-listed salmon and trout, and the serious threat to treaty-reserved rights…
