NEW OPPORTUNITIES EMERGE TO IMPROVE PADDLING ON NATIONAL FORESTS

“There is a big difference between tolerating my paddling habit and supporting it.” I’m pretty sure I first spoke those words to a significant other, but during a presentation last fall I directed the comment to the US Forest Service (USFS). We were meeting to discuss the future of 1 million acres of National Forest land and many classic whitewater runs in Western North Carolina, rivers on which the USFS must allow sustainable recreation like paddling. After my plea for support, I cued up “recreational speed dating,” during which various recreation groups presented for 5 minutes each on their hopes and desires for the national forest.
