As we were getting ready to close this issue and send it to print, we received the devastating news that our friend Benjamin Hjort, former Kayak Session columnist and many-time photographic contributor to the magazine, has left us, taken by an avalanche in his homeland of Norway. In these situations, words are hard to find. Social media is flowing with tributes. People struggle to find understanding. Why? Why him? Why now? Why do we have to endure the loss of another beloved member of our community? Benji ran an outdoor program for teenagers, wrote a safety column for Kayak Session, paddled all four corners of the world, and took part in some of the burliest missions—he was no stranger to risks. But he was also no stranger to being cautious…
