BORNE O AN EXPEDITION THROUGH TIME

Dense and dramatic jungle, minimal infrastructure and limited information led to no shortage of logistical challenges for a team that recently completed a four-month rolling expedition on the island of Borneo. The group still managed to find rivers of incredible quality, and with everything from class 2+ roadside to remote and committing class 5, this unique island has something to offer everyone.

The intricate network of rivers in Borneo has long been an essential part of life for those living on the island. Around 3000 years ago the first settlers arrived on the island and navigated the waterways upstream before taking to the land and settling into a nomadic lifestyle. The wide meandering river valleys are to this day used as transport to bypass the dense natural jungle. Travel to many major towns on the island is done through the use of small ferries; roads are a less favorable option since the fast-growing undergrowth can rapidly engulf poorly maintained infrastructure. A quick look at Borneo’s geography gives a clear picture of its whitewater potential.
