We recently shared on Facebook, as we often do, a call for support from a group working to protect its local rivers from dam building. While many supported this initiative, several responses expressed a familiar skepticism:
“Why bother, do you seriously think kayakers on Facebook can fight a dam threat backed by a big corporation?”
With all the news sources available and the extent to which we are globally connected through media, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by bad news and issues of such magnitude that we feel like whatever action we take will have no effect at all. It often seems that “idealistic whistle blowers”have little chance of winning against huge multinational corporate superpowers driving development worldwide. And therefore, why bother trying?
