Interview SAGE DONNELLY

World Freestyle Champion, photographer, World Cup slalom paddler, Green Race winner, and hard-core creeker, there is little Sage Donnelly hasn’t done. Her paddling accomplishments are impressive on their own. Add in being a type one diabetic with celiac and hypo thyroid disease, and well, there’s not much to say outside of RESPECT. At 23 years old, Sage brings more than 20 years of experience to her boating, but for her, the most important skill remains finding joy on the water.

KS: Last October, you became Freestyle World Champion, breaking a medal drought for US Women. Epic. What does that mean for you now, six months later? SD: Honestly, not much has changed. It felt—and still feels—amazing to get the win, but my day-to-day life didn’t change at all. Every once in a while, it is a very special feeling to be able to say to myself, “Wow, I’m a world champion.” KS: Was that a childhood dream of yours? SD: As long as I can remember, my goal was to make the US Freestyle team when I turned 15, the age limit for competing in an ICF World Championships, and to work towards being a World Champion myself.
