THE BATTLE FOR THE SORBA

In the small village of Rassa, two of the most beautiful rivers in the Alps, the Gronda and the Sorba, meet. For 15 years, the Italian municipality of Rassa has been working to develop a hydroelectric project at the confluence of these two torrents. Thanks to the battles fought by kayakers and fishermen in the 1980s, the current regulations of the Piedmont Region prohibit any capture for hydroelectric purposes within the Sesia basin and its tributaries. However, in November 2015, an exemption was made, and a construction permit is underway. The current plan calls for a power plant to be built in the middle of the village, with a 1.7 km penstock to control the water flow, and water withdrawal from a river already dry eight months a year.
