VHS, THE SPIDER JUMP, AND PROGRESSION

Remember when we used to watch kayaking movies? Some of which were even on VHS tape! Burning Time, Twitch, Hotel Charlie, the YGP movies…I grew up watching some of these videos, and I don’t think I would be the paddler I am today without them. Most likely I would still be paddling in between gates on an artificial river. Or maybe I would be running rivers, but I would be rocking neoprene pants, a random ski full-face helmet, and a two-meter-long, 80° paddle. And I would be setting up live-bait safety at the end of every rapid. I know what you’re thinking: “BEATER.” Right? But that’s how we did it back then.
