How many times have you smashed your elbow paddling? It’s a common occurrence for all paddlers, no matter whether you are creeking, river running or playboating, and the aftermath can be anything from a mild to a prolonged injury. The body’s reaction to traumatizing the elbow and the small, fluid-filled sac known as the bursa at the end of the elbow is the subject of this column. WHAT IS OLECRANON BURSITIS? At the end of the elbow, also known as the olecranon, and in other joints in the body, there are small, flat, fluid-filled sacs known as bursa that allow soft tissue such as tendons or ligaments and skin to slide over boney prominences, thereby smoothing the movement of these structures over the bone.
