In September 2024, the River Collective brought together thirty bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students from twenty countries for the sixth annual Students for Rivers Camp, held this year on the Neretva River in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After a dry summer, September rains transformed the river, restoring its flow. The group set up basecamp in Ulog, a village nestled between two stark contrasts: upstream, one of Europe’ s most biodiverse and pristine rivers; downstream, a newly built 43-meter-high dam (140 feet). Once the reservoir fills, its waters will submerge the very spot where the camp stood. The participants, from a broad spectrum of disciplines, united science, art, and community action to craft a shared vision for preserving the free-flowing Upper Neretva River.
