Twenty-three years ago, the Millrace Massacre and Iceman Championships was created to bring friends together in the dead of winter for a day of friendly kayak racing. On January 7th, 2023, it was apparent that The Iceman has become a Southeast staple in the racing circuit, with the most participants ever: 97 total racers. This race brings together every level of paddler, from seasoned professionals to first-year boaters looking to compete in their first kayak race. High water leading into the day's events provided plenty of carnage for the throngs of spectators lining the boardwalk on the Saluda River in Columbia, SC.
