Salto del Armadillo, or the Yellow Waterfall, is located in northwestern Ecuador and was first descended by Ecuadorian paddler Abe Herrera in 2017. This area is still being explored and has a lot of potential for those looking to go off the beaten path, as it is full of unrun waterfalls and sections of whitewater. There are only a few paddlers in the area. Most rivers run during the rainy season (late February-March), which isn’t as common a time to travel to Ecuador for kayaking. Flows aren't guaranteed, but in early February 2023, Jan Larrue and Albert Martinez hit the jackpot—they arrived in Santo Domingo and went straight to the good ones, sneaking in three laps.
