Situated far out in the Baltic Sea, in the open waters between Sweden, Germany, and Poland, geographically, the island of Bornholm feels far away from the Danish mainland. Though only a short flight from Copenhagen, Bornholm’s exceptional position in the Fennoscandian border zone, a geological fault line between a 1.7 billion-year-old granite bedrock in the north of the island, and a 500 million-year-old sandstone layer in the south of Bornholm, makes the island distinct from the rest of Denmark in both landscape and geology.
